Travel Insurance Terms and Conditions of medical Treatment

This has been a very busy few months with many new clients from diverse backgrounds and interests, Mountain Bikers we set off for the European season, and some of the major travel insurance claim to deal with.

We have found that the main claim we have often emerged from existing medical conditions. We want to remind people that traveling seems to be the crucial to declare ALL pre-existing health conditions with your travel insurance broker before you mel.

Pre-existing conditions are usually considered as a medical or physical condition that you are aware before the start date of insurance. This is regardless of whether any diagnosis has been made. 'Conscious' included when you seek advice, care, treatment, given medication or medical attention has been sought. It also includes any condition that you are awaiting test results or further investigation or treatment or specialist consultation.

Some health conditions are covered automatically by the insurance company (but you still have to declare them), some will be covered through an agreement with your broker, and some conditions may not be covered so that it will be added as an exception in your policy document.

Some insurance companies will also see whether your claim is 'directly or indirectly' linked to existing conditions, so any consequential costs also will be looking very carefully.

In Health and Travel Insurance Broker we can source travel insurance that covers many existing medical conditions. We have deliberately chosen a travel insurance policy from a company that does more than just 'check the box', so you can be sure that the proper medical assessment made when determining whether cover can be approved.

The reason it is important to be open and honest with your insurance broker is because medical costs abroad can be very large, and if the insurance provider to find you have not stated condition then you may be facing hospital costs in the tens of thousands - with some of the claims from hospitals abroad even amounting to hundreds of thousands. The claim that we have had so far around NZ $ 320,000 for 'near fatal arrhythmia' derived from existing heart condition. So beware!
